Trascendiendo los clichés del “Lejano Oeste”, cada episodio de una hora muestra múltiples perspectivas de las historias que no solo definieron una época, sino que continúan moldeando Norteamérica hoy. La producción de ocho episodios, que estrena dos capítulos seguidos cada semana, es presentada por el ganador del Oscar Kevin Costner, quien además la produce junto a la reconocida historiadora ganadora del Pulitzer Doris Kearns Goodwin y la compañía galardonada con el Oscar RadicalMedia, en asociación con Territory Pictures y Pastimes Productions.
“EL VIEJO OESTE CON KEVIN COSTNER” ofrece una mirada renovada a la amplia y compleja historia del Oeste estadounidense, desde fines del siglo XVIII hasta inicios del XX, guiando al espectador a través de diversos conflictos, todos impulsados por la desesperada disputa por el control territorial. Desde las expediciones de Lewis y Clark y la guía de Sacagawea, hasta los enfrentamientos entre agentes de la ley y forajidos, el auge de vaqueros y ganaderos, la resistencia de mujeres que abrieron el camino, el fervor de buscadores de fortuna y la causa de los abolicionistas, la serie abarca un siglo de eventos cruciales.
Con el inconfundible sello de History -contar historias reales a través de potentes dramatizaciones, archivos exhaustivos e intervenciones de expertos que aportan contexto y profundidad-, cada episodio de la serie revive un hecho clave del Lejano Oeste y presenta a sus protagonistas, iluminando tanto las contribuciones indelebles de los pioneros que impulsaron el “sueño del Oeste” como la valiente defensa de los pueblos originarios que lucharon por sus tierras ancestrales. Al mismo tiempo, la producción explora los conflictos sociales, culturales y territoriales que definieron el desarrollo de Estados Unidos, desde los enfrentamientos con los nativos americanos hasta otras luchas que permiten reflexionar sobre la compleja historia del país y los factores que moldearon su identidad como nación.
Sobre el enfoque de la producción, Kevin Costner enfatiza la importancia de la verdad histórica: “Doris y yo estamos realmente comprometidos con contar las cosas como realmente sucedieron, porque eso es lo más interesante. ¿Cómo podemos aprender si evitamos la verdad de lo que estamos viendo? No hay chance. ¿Cómo podríamos siquiera formar una opinión si no lidiamos con la verdad? Así que nos apoyamos en la investigación, en la naturaleza humana, e hicimos el mejor trabajo posible. Nuestra historia no nos avergüenza ni a Doris ni a mí. Nos ilumina. Y es una historia que compartimos mutuamente. No nos sentamos a juzgarla. Solo queremos tener la imagen más clara posible”.
En la misma línea, Doris Kearns Goodwin, reconocida historiadora especializada en presidentes norteamericanos y autora de best-sellers, quien con esta nueva producción alcanzó un total de cinco documentales producidos para HISTORY, resalta el rigor histórico con el que trabajaron: “Lo que hemos tratado de hacer, es como contar 100 años de historia, es narrar historias. Y las historias tienen que ser auténticas, en la medida en que uno pueda hacerlas así. Por eso recurrimos a los mejores expertos que conocían este período, que conocían las historias de los colonos, de los soldados, de las mujeres. Una de las cosas que intentamos hacer—y que no se ha hecho mucho en películas anteriores—es tener que incluir a las mujeres. Es como si los hombres hubieran ido solos, como cowboys, sheriffs, tiroteos en el O.K. Corral… pero las mujeres también fueron. Y fue una época terriblemente dura para ir allí. (…) Tal vez en 50 años surja una nueva corriente de investigación que nos diga algo distinto, pero según lo mejor que sabemos hoy, estas historias tienen autenticidad”.
Costner coincide en destacar el rol de las mujeres y como su fuerza y resiliencia fueron determinantes en la construcción del Oeste: “No eran solo hombres los que luchaban por sus vidas, sus hijos, su forma de vida, su religión. También había mujeres que se levantaban y se veían obligadas a ser increíblemente fuertes”.
La serie además explora historias conmovedoras, como la que Goodwin resalta: “Creo que mi historia favorita entre todas las que contamos en esta docuserie es la de una joven llamada Cynthia Ann Parker, que tenía solo nueve años. (…) Hay algo en esa historia que simplemente es tan compleja de esas culturas se cruzaron. Y cómo alguien puede vivir en otra cultura, ser feliz, y luego regresar a su cultura original y extrañar la anterior”.
Para Costner, mirar al pasado es una herramienta esencial para aprender y transmitir: “Vivimos con las heridas que hemos creado. Tenemos la oportunidad de sanarlas si realmente entendemos lo que hicimos”. Y Goodwin complementa esa visión al resaltar el cambio en la forma de abordar la historia: “Lo que realmente aprendí al ser parte de esta serie (…) es que mi perspectiva siempre había sido desde arriba hacia abajo (…) Pero lo que hace esta serie es invertir ese enfoque. Es historia desde abajo hacia arriba. Se basa en la experiencia de las personas mismas, y eso es una parte fundamental de la historia. (…) Creo que es parte de una expansión saludable de la forma en que estamos entendiendo la historia en nuestro país”.
Ambos productores también reflexionan sobre las lecciones que el Oeste puede dejar frente a los desafíos actuales. Costner plantea: “Parece que cuestionamos mucho lo que sucedió entonces, y honestamente, cuando vemos lo que ocurre hoy, deberíamos cuestionarlo aún más. Es como… ¿qué hemos aprendido? ¿Qué ganamos cuando dominamos a otro pueblo, cuando queremos expandir nuestras fronteras? ¿Qué ganamos realmente cuando silenciamos una voz? (…) Es muy fácil para nosotros mirar a tu país y ver qué podría estar mal. Y para ustedes, también es fácil ver lo que está mal en el nuestro. (…) El 90% de nuestros problemas, creo, con humanidad, empatía, con un pensamiento real orientado a la justicia y la comprensión, podrían solucionarse”.
Mientras tanto, Goodwin observa que los conflictos del pasado resuenan en los dilemas actuales de Estados Unidos: “Uno de los problemas más grandes que estamos viviendo hoy en nuestro país—y que también se dio en ese tiempo y a principios del siglo XX—fue algo que advirtió Theodore Roosevelt: que si las personas de distintas clases, regiones, religiones y sectores comienzan a verse entre sí como ‘el otro’, en lugar de como ciudadanos estadounidenses comunes, perderemos esa base que una democracia necesita”.
“EL VIEJO OESTE CON KEVIN COSTNER” destaca batallas decisivas y figuras icónicas, desde la victoria clave del jefe Little Turtle sobre el ejército de EE. UU., que provocó la contraofensiva del general “Mad” Anthony Wayne y el imparable empuje hacia el oeste, hasta las firmes resistencias de las tribus Blackfeet, Comanche y Lakota Sioux y de guerreros como Red Cloud y Crazy Horse, así como el legendario vigilante Joaquin Murrieta.
Al respecto, Costner remarca la importancia de ir más allá de los héroes consagrados: “A veces vemos a las personas en los libros de historia en su momento de mayor gloria, en el instante en que hicieron historia. Pero entender su historia previa a ese punto también es fascinante para mí. Y cuando investigás a otro hombre, a otra mujer, empezás también a ver a quienes los rodeaban. Empezás a entender su forma de vida. Y eso me entusiasma”.
